Quality of Life Upgrades

Uh yeah was gonna put all this into the zine but that page is tiny and it's 9:48 AM and I need to get this done by midday, also I've got an assignment due that's worth like 60% of my grade. Lmao I also ran out of my anti-anxiety meds yesterday and realised I lost my repeats ;-;. Thass allright I'll work it out

Adressing my scrolling addiction

Hate to say it cause it's just not as interesting as the others, but yeah my life has gotten exponentially better since I stopped scrolling. I think everyone knows this right?

Not to say that this will work for everyone, but (along with a lot of persistence and effort) the thought process that let me break my addiction was as follows:

I recognised that the ability to tear yourself away from your phone is a muscle that can and should be trained, and one that can only be trained when you're in the midst of scrolling. This realisation led me to look forward to when I inevitably started scrolling again because the second that I'd remember that I'd gleefully stop.

Notetaking

In an insane shock to my former self I am now a very avid notetaker. Something Something David Lynch. I value my thoughts so naturally I wanna store them nicely and get the most out of them.

I've tried notetaking/notebooks/calanders/organisers and never had any luck with any of them... enter Obsidian.

Obsidian is a lovely piece of free notetaking software. What a refreshing sentence in this day and age. It's incredibly lightweight, stores everything in raw markdown/.txt on your device (no holding your notes hostage, easy to jump platform with or you can literally open them all in any text editor)

The main thing that sold me on it was that you can use links to organise stuff instead of folders. As you use it you slowly build a wiki style database of notes and I'm yet to have trouble finding a note I wanted to. I can see all notes tagged "Comedy", or both "Comedy" and "Tech" if I wanna peruse my notes on my comedic contraptions.

Last thing and then I'll shut up about Obsidian forever, it's got brilliant community plugins... Check this shit out.



Normally it doesn't look like that but I spent a solid couple hours setting it up and god damn do I love using this thing. I got a pomodoro timer and ambient music player down the bottom, calender and to do list, that 'Graph View' is a map view of all my notes, the biggest circle is my Comedy note and any circle with a line connecting to it is a note that links back to Comedy.

Available for mobile as well, and you can automatically sync your notes between devices. If you're a self-hoster, you can run that for free on your server, otherwise it's like $7 a month (I think you can do it cheaper/for free through google drive as well? Honestly I just pay the $7 a month)

Was gonna type more but looks like I'm out of time, so here's some dot points:

- Blender. I love Blender. Incredibly free digital art tool. Is known for it's 3D stuff (which I love) but at this point I use it for general compositing, posters, basically everything. Including that zine page.
-Piracy. Pirating stuff is brilliant :)))). I love paying for 0 media subscription services, unironically I feel like it frees up some funds for me to use to generally support my artist friends.
-Being kind. This one should probably have been up the top, but oh my god it's incredible. We don't live in a 0 sum world. We can just like, make each other happy. It's great. The kinder I am, the kinder people are to me. In high school I genuienly thought I was destined to be a lonely loser for life, and couldn't comprehend living the life I do right now. And the difference really was a handful of people in my life that were genuienly just kind and giving.

It's instilled a very deep and real urge to do the same, so genuienly if I can help you in any way, be it advice/help with any of the stuff i've talked about here, setting up a free website as cool as this one, or just literally anything else, message me :)
